Foreign Licence Validation

Private Pilot Licence (PPL) Validation

We encourage individuals with non-South African licences to travel to our country and hire an aircraft. If you hold a valid PPL, irrespective of the country of issue, it is possible to validate the licence for private use in South Africa.

Requirements for the validation of a PPL:

1. Pass an air law examination at our facility at Grand Central airport, after having been briefed on the relevant aspects, and completing the Computer Based Training (CBT) presentation on this topic.

2. You need to be thoroughly briefed on local procedures and operational aspects associated with these procedures.

3. You need to pass a practical flight test, including a navigation exercise. This will entail approximately 2 hours of dual flight time in one of our well-equipped aircraft.

4. Have your medical certificate and radio licence validated.

5. Complete the paperwork for the application to our SA-CAA, and pay the appropriate fee.

Commercial and ATPL licence Validation

Being of a professional nature, the reason for the commercial / ATP validation have to be valid, and the potential employer in South Africa has to be part of the process. For those foreign airline pilots whom would like to do some recreational flying, it is a simple process to validate the licence as a PPL.

The requirements for the validation of a foreign Commercial / ATP licence:

1. The foreign licence must be valid.

2. The South African air law and procedures examination must be written at the SA-CAA.

3. A full instrument / commercial flight test must be conducted by a Designated Flight Examiner (DFE).

4. Your foreign medical must be substantiated by the full medical report from your examiner (the certificate is not enough), or you must complete a South African class 1 medical examination.

5. Your radio licence must be validated.

6. You can then apply to the SA-CAA, with the relevant paperwork and pay the applicable fee.

7. Your validation will be in effect for one year, or the duration of the validity of your foreign licence, which ever is less.

Each validation case generally has to be assessed on its own merits – it is best to contact us for any queries that inevitably arise over such situations.
